Gary attended and played for Thurston Upper School in Suffolk. He was a versatile defender who could also play in midfield. He played for Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur during the 1980s, playing and scoring in the 1983 FA Cup Final for Brighton and also playing in the 1987 FA Cup Final for Spurs, finishing up on the losing side for both. He did however win the 1984 UEFA Cup with Spurs, scoring his penalty in the shootout against Anderlecht. He was also capped by England, and was called up to the 1986 World Cup squad (along, confusingly, with the Everton player Gary Stevens). He made two substitute appearances in the tournament. He left Spurs for Portsmouth in 1990 but persistent injuries forced him to retire in 1992. He had never fully recovered from a knee injury suffered three years earlier due to a tackle by Vinnie Jones.
