The huge hands, his long arms, the spectacular style, the uncontrollable irreverence: all this made Frederico Barrigana a major figure in Portuguese football and the National Team. From Alcochete from Onze Unidos do Montijo, was at Sporting that he began to try his luck in the shadow of that huge Azevedo always praising the qualities of the boy. The opportunities, however, not emerged. In that time, Azevedo was purely and simply immovable. The relations between big clubs where gallant, very different from today. Faced with the disappearance of Béla Andrásik, Hungarian goalkeeper linked to anti-fascists who had fled from Portugal from the pressures of PIDE, FC Porto asked Sporting’s Barrigana for loan for one season. He remained there twelve. Frederico Barrigana never was champion on FC Porto. He even accumulated several 4th, 5th and 6th seats. This did not prevent him from becoming one of the most sung keepers from the National Championship players and the portista goalkeeper with more games in the league, being only recently overtaken by Vítor Baía. And, therefore, the doors of the National Team opened up to him as a successor to the same Azevedo that had praised him so much before. His debut was against Spain, but that same year of 1948, a game between Portugal and Ireland, held in Lisbon, Barrigana relegated Azevedo to the bench, which caused such a dissatisfaction in the “old lion” that he never addressed to Barrigana ever again (so they say). As in FC Porto, Barrigana lived had some difficult time in the national team. Being subjected to some historical humiliations, the most significant one in Madrid, with Spain (1-5), in Vienna, with Austria (1-9) in the qualifiers for the World Cup of 1950 and 1954, respectively. His most famous game for the national team was against France in 20 April 1952 in Paris, in which the Portuguese team lost 3-0. The defeat was not bigger thanks to the fantastic game by Barrigana. Dorival Yustrich, the Brazilian coach who ended the crisis of titles in FC Porto, also brought an end to the career of Barrigana in Antas, dismissing him from Porto, in a controversial decision. After that he spent two years in Division II, with Salgueiros, he coached Salgueiros, Chaves, the Academica de Viseu, and several other smaller clubs. He was also in Angola, working with young players, and never ceased to be the ''Iron Hands''. _________________ ''My heart only has one colour: Blue and White!! João D.
