In 1963, Pickering signed for Everton along with fullback Ray Wilson. This was manager Harry Catterick's response to failing in the previous season's European Cup, despite the presence of Alex Young, Derek Temple and Roy Vernon in attack. He went on to make 97 league appearances and score 56 goals in his four years on Merseyside. During this time Pickering won three caps and scored five goals for England in 1964 during his Everton career. He made his international debut on May 27, 1964, against the USA, and scored a hat-trick in a 10–0 victory for Alf Ramsey's team. He could never force his way into the England side more regularly with competition such as Gerry Hitchens, Bobby Smith, Roger Hunt, Geoff Hurst and of course Jimmy Greaves. However despite scoring freely no championship came Pickering's or Everton's way. In fact Pickering picked up an injury on the way to the 1966 FA Cup and was ommitted from the semi-final in favour of unheard of Mike Trebilcock. Trebilcock went onto FA Cup glory and Pickering simmered on the sidelines. Sadly Pickering's Everton career was sandwhich between two league triumphs. After 1966 his career tapered off at the top level and the spotlight dimmed, in 1967, Pickering joined Birmingham City. He spent two years in the Midlands, making 74 league appearances and netting 27 goals. He signed for Blackpool in 1969 scoring eighteen goals in his first season with Blackpool and finished as the club's top scorer. The following season, 1970–71, Pickering scored seven goals in fourteen starts for Blackpool, but it wasn't enough to save the club from relegation back to Division Two at the end of the season. Pickering played his final game for the club on February 20, 1971, a single-goal defeat at Derby County. New manager Bob Stokoe, who succeeded Les Shannon around Christmastime, allowed Pickering to return to Blackburn Rovers; however, after a disagreement with Rovers manager Ken Furphy, he left for Brighton, where he finished his career. A great promising career with injury and fate depriving him of true stardom but for a time on Merseyside he was King. Fred PICKERING | 1960-1967 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
