Benfica chased him but under the pressure of an older brother who was playing on Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP) juniors team, he joined SCP youth team in 1953. It was on the 10th February 1957 that he made his debut on SCP senior team on a Championship match against Atlético and on the very next year he won his 1st title, despite the fact that he wasn't yet on the first eleven. Season 1958/59 saw the team suffering a major renovation and Fernando Mendes grabbed his place on the leonine midfield, where he evidenced himself as a player with good technique but mainly by his never ending stamina and fighting skills, as well as his charismatic leadership, which led him to attain the rank of Captain after Travaços made his retirement. He was only 22 years old. In the season of 1961/62 he celebrated the winning of the Championship again, but on the next season he suffered a severe fine from the board of directors for going against them on a previous fine that had been issued to the whole squad. He got withdrawn until the end of season alongside his team mate Mário Lino. He made an epic comeback next year, where he was, alongside Carvalho, one of the totalists of the historic campaign of 1964 where SCP won the Cup's Winners Cup, with games like the 5-0 against Man Utd or the 16-1 against Apoel Nicosia. He was the captain. By that time, he was already a regular presence on the starting eleven from the National Squad where he attained 21 games, the last one revealing itself fatal: it was on the 25th April 1965 in Bratislava against former Chech Republic, he suffered a murderous tackle which injured him badly on a knee, ruining his career when he was 27 and stopping him from going to WC 1966 where Portugal granted the 3rd place. He was also totalist (until his injury) of the Portuguese qualifying campaign to that WC, making pair with Coluna on the Portuguese midfield. Even so, he went in the National Comitive by pressure of the coach Otto Glória, as a renowment for his influence on the group. After cirgury and a long and painful recovery, he even tried to comeback and actually managed it, but he wasn't the same player anymore and retired himself at the age of 30. He went then abroad where he stayed between 1969 and 1973, firstly on South Africa as player-trainer of Lusitano de Joanesburgo, and then on thr USA on the Boston Astros. He had not the same technique as other players, but always looked clearly for the ball, and put it to play. There were no dead balls with him. He was kind of a player ahead of his time in tactical awareness and playing tempos. Never quiting a ball and screaming to all his team mates, Fernando Mendes was the classical center midfielder who is captain. Good passing with the ball, good defensive attitude without it. He has 225 games for SCP with 2 goals during the period of 1956 and 1968. He won 2 National Championships, 1 Portugal Cup and the Cup's Winners Cup. On the National Squad he attained 21 games during the period of 1959-65. A Classic Captain of SCP.
