His dribbling skills, combined with great speed on the ball (it’s a fact that he could keep his entire speed while dribbling), vision and objectiveness (no dribble, no pass, no shot was in vain – all that he did had a purpose) were many times the only reason why Benfica supporters went to the stadium at all! – all they wanted was to see Chalana in action. From 1975 to 1984 (1st 9 years) Chalana played for S.L. Benfica making 263 appearances and 39 goals, also being nicknamed ''The Litlle Genial'' or ''Chalanix'' due to his obvious similarity with cartoon character Asterix. Youngest Portuguese player ever to debut in the National Team at 17 years of age. Would go on to make only 27 appearances, yet was the best player in the Portuguese National Team in Euro ’84 and was selected for a Euro ’84 “Dream Teamâ€(cid:0) – Portugal would finish 3rd, only losing to France in the Semi-Finals… in the last minute of extra time. Would end his international career prematurely due to consecutive injuries. After his displays in the European Championships was bought by Bordeaux in 1984. Bordeaux were the greatest team in France and one of the best in Europe, with international players like Tigana, Bossis and Lacombe. The main reasons for Chalana's underachievement were consecutive injuries and bad career management, which started precisely after he joined Bordeaux, at only 25 – he would never reach the same level again. When his career was supposed to go sky high, it went straight downhill.
