When he played, it was as a child having fun rather than a professional at work. Started with Slavia Ruda Śląska as a teenager after the war (1945-1952). At age 20 went to Orzeł Łódź to serve out his military service with the club, who resided in the second division. Could potentially not have ever played in Poland's first division had he not been spotted, a year later, by the Hungarian coach Janos Steiner who had been summoned by Legia Warszawa to build it into the new power of the league. Pohl would see out his compulsory service and continue to play with Legia till 1956, helping the club to its first titles in 1955, 1956 in the form of league and cup doubles, and scoring 56 times in 72 appearences. He would return to Śląska with Górnik Zabrze in 1957, taking these new comers of the second division to 9 titles in 10 years. By 1963 he would link up with Szołtysik and a young Lubański to form a deadly trident in attack, which would help to yeild five straight league titles. At the end of his time with Górnik he set the Ekstraklasa record for most goals by a single player in the league, with 186 in 264 matches. Some say that he perhaps could have gone well beyond 200 goals, but in the latter stages of his career he was moved into the midfield. When at Górnik, 'Pohl was said to favour passes to younger team-mates in the course of brilliant attacking manoeuvres, rather than to finish himself, with his impressive shot. This was to teach the young players accountability for results and to ensure the future success of the club.' For Poland Pohl was capped 46 times and scored 39 goals, sadly the only tournament that Poland managed to qualify for during his time was the 1960 Olympics, where they went out in the group stages, but Pohl did make his mark in a 6-1 win over Tunisia with five goals. Pohl's international career was cut short in 1965, when after one of Poland's games, Pohl enjoyed some liquor, which was forbidden by the head coach Ryszard Koncewicz, and this led to an indefinite suspension. As a result popular opinion soon was that, ''Pohl enjoys his beer''(Apparently he responded to invitations for drinks with locals and was liked for his storytelling). This appreciation for alcohol, to all accounts did not hinder his phenomenal game or his ability to maintain form. Yet some still argue that this was a sign of his lack of discipline in footballing matters, and as a consequence that is why he did not set higher records in the league and with the national team, and why perhaps that today he is not regarded as the best player in Poland's history. Honours: Polish League Titles: 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 Polish Cups: 1955, 1956, 1965 Polish League Top Scorer: 1954, 1959, 1961 Ektraklasa's all time Top Scorer: 186 goals Career total: 327 matches/238 goals (could not locate statistics for time in second division and Górnik cup matches) Ernst POHL | 1960 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
