He is best known in football for his advocacy of systems thinking. Quote: Gerets played for Rekem, Standard de Liège, AC Milan, MVV Maastricht and PSV Eindhoven, winning among others the 1987-88 European Cup, two Belgian championships and six Dutch championships. Although he was a defender, he was well known for a particular attacking skill: long distance throw-ins. He is the second most capped player for the Belgium national football team, with 86 appearances and 2 goals. In the First Round game in Italia 90 against Uruguay, which Belgium won 3-1, Gerets was sent off. Quote: Player Hounours With Standard de Liege Belgian League: 1982, 1983 Belgian Cup: 1981 Belgian Super Cup: 1981 With PSV Eindhoven Dutch League: 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992 Dutch Cup: 1988, 1989, 1990 UEFA Champions League: 1988 He was the natural leader of the squads he was part of. Very determined and fearless, he could go up the right flank with easy flair and an immense stamina which made him last whole games at full trothle and which contributed to the spawn of his career: he retired at the age of 37, still playing at the highest level. He had good positional awareness as later in his career he would sometimes play as a central defender, his aerial game, despite not being that tall, was pretty good due to his impulsion and he was really brave which led to his nickname (as well as the bearded savage look). He did scare some attackers. Passing, short or long, he did with competence, and like said, he ran over the right flank always contributing to his team needs. Sometimes he did try the long shots, altough he was not prolific in that, just a big shot power to show. At this time, he was probably the best right defender of the world. Adobe Flash Player is no longer supported at 0m43s - positional defense at 3m36s - he carries on with the ball at 5m36s - mid shooting _________________ When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.
