His nickname was ''Peito de Aço'' (Steel Chest). He was a striker (center forwards) for C.R. Vasco da Gama, S.E. Palmeiras and the Brazilian national team. He received 20 caps with the Brazilian national team, with 15 goals and won both the 1958 and 1962 World Cups (scoring respectively 5 and 4 goals himself). Vavá scored in the finals of both 1958 and 1962, thus becoming the first player to score in the final of two different world cups. To this day, only four players achieved this feat, the other three being Pelé, Paul Breitner and Zinedine Zidane. Vavá is also one of only four players to have scored three goals in World Cup finals along with Geoff Hurst, Pelé and Zidane.
