I only wish I could be saying 'is'. It is probably the weakest set of stats I have produced so I apologize now if some of them are percieved to be incorrect, as I have to admit, a lot of stuff went through my head when looking up and down all the ladders. I was fixated at some figures in them and just kept thinking, What if? What if it had never happened, he could have this figure by now, he could be this good. What can be for certain though is that he would definitly have been on the plane to South Africa next year if it wasn't for the injury that as we all know has ended his career at such a young age for a footballer. I wanted to represent him at his peak, but he never got a chance to really have one. Two consectuve January transfers followed by a year out makes it hard to pinpoint, although for arguements sake, I think it would be fair to say that his time in the Premier League with Norwich City followed by the move to West Ham had him at the height of his powers. It put him well and truly on the map as a potential star of the future as well as showing the talent he already posessed. One could argue that the season back from injury saw him play to a similair high standard as before despite the fact he had put on weight and had obviously lost some of his already depleted athletisism. The platform was there and I don't think anyone can deny that the only way was up, however that was that. I want to do him justice in the sense that I want to highlight his qualities as a player, but I also want to be fair and realistic and take into account the year out as like I have already said, the 2007-2008 season was a succesful season for Ashton despite the effects of the injury. The Crewe stats represent the massive potential he had as a youngster and one only has to look at footage of him at Crewe and read the praise he recieved at the time to know that he should have had one of the brightest futures in the English game. The Norwich/West Ham stats show the next stage of development, where he had already showcased such skill worthy of the most seasoned of pro's. It was easy to forget that he was only 21 at the time as most players of his age wouldn't be so far developed let alone be playing as many games as he did. For this, we have Dario Gradi to thank. But then the bloody injury buggers it up. As a young man at Crewe, fitness wasn't even a problem as he played a full Division 1 season with them at the age of only 19. That's more games than a lot of established Premier League players now. At Norwich it was more of the same and he was still fighting fit when he joined up with West Ham. At a risk of going around in circles and raising the same points again and again, which I fear I already probably have, I guess in summary all I can say, is that all suggestions are welcome. _________________ My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest midfielder of his generation.
