He won the UEFA Cup in his first season, and was soon considered one of the best attackers in Germany. In 1981 suffered a near-career-ending knee injury in a match against future club Bayer Leverkusen, the player responsible, Jürgen Gelsdorf apparently had threats against his life along with a riot from travelling Frankfurt fans. Within four years of arriving at Frankfurt, Cha Boom had made 122 appearences scoring 46 times. In 1983 Cha Boom arrived in Leverkusen, staying a total of six years. Becoming the Bundesliga's MVP in the 1985/1986 season, and winning another UEFA Cup in 1988; after having scored the equalizing goal in a dramatic second leg come back. Made 185 appearances scoring 52 goals with Leverkusen at the time of his retirment in 1989. Was ranked 9th by Kicker magazine in a poll of the best attackers in the Bundesliga in the past 40 years. For South Korea Cha Boom has 121 caps and a national team record of 55 goals. Helped South Korea qualify for the 1986 World Cup, ending a 32 year absence. Video: Cha Booom!
