Coming from Barreirense, where he fell in love with the goalkeeper position watching Francisco Silva saves (who was substitute of Azevedo on the National Team), he was signed by Sporting Clube de Portugal with 18 years only, soon showing his rebellious charisma when he questioned the transfer to SCP because he wasn't aware of it, demanding more money and, actually, getting 5 more times than the initial fee. In SCP he started on the bench since Azevedo was still playing but at the age of 19 he was already on the starting eleven, and during the 8 years he spent on SCP he won 5 National Championships and one Portugal Cup. He made his debut on the National Squad in a friendly game against South Africa that Portugal won by 3-1. He was the goalkeeper of the NT despite the opposition of Costa Pereira, being summoned up 18 times which could be much more if he didn't left SCP. Polemic, rebbelious, irreverent and opposing the dictatorship of the regime at the time, he suffered quite a lot for his positions and left SCP at the age of 26, after more money demands that the SCP directors, some associated with the regime, didn't grant him as they were already fed up with him. He was loaned to Spain, to play for Granada and Oviedo, despite Barcenola and Real Madrid wanting to hire him, SCP directors didn't allowed it. He wore always black outfits and one day he explained to a spanish journalist: ''I wear black, because as long portuguese football is on the hands of the ''doctors'', it is grieving.'' In 1961 he wanted to go to Salgueiros, but once again SCP didn't allowed it as they suspected it was Benfica behind it, and therefore they demanded his return to SCP, which he refused by demanding more money. He went to Atlético but went abroad once again after a bizarre incidence which saw him condemned for a supposed rape, which he refused saying that SCP directores were setting him up. He had to flee to Spain to go to Marocco and this on the hald time of a match, he was playing and then on the 2nd half nobody knew where he was. He was granted the status of politic refugee. He played and shined in Tanger, getting invited by the King's emissaries to convert to muslim and to change his name and nationality but he refused. Only in 1963 he finished his contractual terms with SCP but since he was still convicted for 11 years in portuguese ground he remained in the north africa becoming a coach some years laters in Argelia and Tunisia. Later he went to Spain where he remained until 1983 coming back to Portugal to die in 2005. As a sidenote, my parent told me a lot of stories about this player. That he punched a lot of people, even a director of SCP. He was crazy, at least portrayed as one. But remained as one of greatest figures of portuguese football history.
