At the age of 20 he arrives at Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP) and struggled at the start to get in the first line of a team who possessed an offensive line of great quality, but in the season of 1941/42 he got his chance when Pireza and then Peyroteo suffered some injuries and he became 2nd best shooter of the team with 16 goals. Next season he had his definetely turning point. A lot of injuries were suceeding and Joseph Szabo, the coach, made a right midfielder out of Canário. The experiment turned out great and Canário never left the midfield again. He played in the classic WM as one of the 2 central mids, being the right one. He became then the main link of connection between the defence and the attack, using his refined technique and a great vision, which led him to make some great assisting work to the wingers as well as to the forwards. Jesus Correia used to say he just needed to run and the ball would get in his front ready to cross. At the same time, his fighting spirit allowed him to contribute in the defence flow, where he usually could count with the support of a companion with a different playing profile than his, and who for a long time was Verissimo, with who Canário had a great mutual understanding. (Personally I would say something of a at their peek Gattuso and Pirlo thing) He was part of the great team of the 5 Violinos ( The 5 Violins ), from which he was the main anchor, being even considered the 6th Violin, winning titles after titles during the 14 seasons that he played in SCP, playing more than 400 games (272 official ones), scoring 40 official goals in a close total of 100. He is the 5th player in terms of conquered titles for SCP. 17 at all with 7 National Championships, 3 Portugal Cups, 6 Lisbon Championships and the Imperium Cup. He was capped 10 times for the NT, despite arriving only with the age of 30. He is part of SCP history as one of the most emblematic players, contributting to the golden age of the club. _________________ When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.
