Maybe a comparison with George Best fit better. Few players in the former Yugoslavia had greater cult status than Blaz Slaskovic. Blessed with a natural talent and a ball-control reserved in the game for the most gifted, enough to ensure that Sliskovic would write his name in ''gold font'' in European football history. Tricks, dribbling techniques, passing abilities, strength shot. Sliskovic had everything, but he lacks of self-discipline. Like so many other ''gifted footballers'' Sliskovic was also an ''enfant terrible''. Sliskovic's inner demons giving sleepless nights to his own managers. Nevertheless, or perhaps for that very reason, he remained dominant on the court - though how rebellious he acted outside. In the summer of 1981 he left Velez Mostar for the benefit of Hajduk Split and although the first two seasons were hampered by injuries and military service his years in Split from 83 to 86 become almost sensational. In the Yugoslav Cup final against Red Star Belgrade in 1984 where he scored direct from corner, which he later would repeat several times during his career, and in the UEFA Cup quarter-final against Sparta Prague in the same year scores a free kick that enjoys the same status as Per Egil Ahlsen's classic cup final scoring. In 1986 signed with Olympique Marseille. But the disciplinary problems continued, Sliskovic could be absent from training for several days and also be familiar with the outdoors and the night life in the French city. When the season was over, Marseille leadership received a K.O. and sold the midfielder to the first and best club who showed interest. It would prove to be the Italian Serie-A club Pescara. Together with the Brazilian Junior Sliskovic was voted ''best duo'' during his debut season in Italy, in front of the other constellations which Boniek-Völler (Rome), Gullit-Van Basten (AC Milan) and Passarella-Scifo (Inter) and currently Sliskovic is a legend for Pescara among supporters. Off the field he continues with his indisciplinary behavior. Next season continued in the same way with success on the pitch and off the field controversies, and when the club were relegated from Serie A in the summer of 1989 was clear that it was time to move on again. This time back to France and Lens. In a season. And so Mulhouse. In a season. Before France-career ended in Rennes. In quite right - one more season. Very last stage of his career abroad meant a return to Italy, Serie A and Pescara as in 1992-1993 was again back at the top level in Italy and found it appropriate to bring back his old star. Sliskovic at 35 returned to Croatian football and in the summer of 1998, when nearly 40 years old, finished his playing career that had begun 22 years earlier. ''Within the last 30 meters in front of the opponent's goal, he was fantastic, but he thought only attacks. If he had devoted, half as much, attention to the defensive game, he could become as good as Maradona - Miljan Miljanić, former coach of Yugoslavia.'' _________________ Blaz SLISKOVIC | 1983-1986 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
