Remember big Billy? The things he used to whisper in my ear! I used to start shaking! Vinnie Jones wrote: We did go into Sheffield one night, to a wine bar, and wished we hadn't. Billy Whitehurst, a big, strapping bruiser of a centre forward, and a great lad to have in the dressing-room, suggested the players all met there. ''I parked my sponsored car 'Vinnie's Vauxhall' on the opposite side of the road only to see later a load of Sheffield Wednesday fans jumping all over it...Next minute a load of them marched into the bar and confronted us. ''Billy stood up and I moved to his shoulder, noticing the other players getting to their feet as well. Suddenly, a pint glass flew towards us and clouted Dave Barnes, one of our full-backs, on the head. ''Billy reacted like lightning. He threw one of the best right-handers I have ever seen - inside or outside a prize fight ring - and the biggest bloke in the group just crumpled to the floor... It stopped the trouble, though. We simply walked out of the place as everybody backed off.'' Billy Whitehurst is the self-proclaimed hard man of football, and it's easy to see why. When he finished playing against Scotland, one of their defenders said he'd preferred playing Ronaldo, and that Whitehurst simply treated him ''like a rag-doll''. Billy Whitehurst was well known for simply running around in circles all day long in what was basically ninety minutes of blood, thunder, intimidation and mayhem, crashing goals in, no, not scoring, literally breaking the goal posts as he smashed another keeper or defender mercilessly into the goal, or perhaps adopting a slyer approach, by elbowing them in the face when no-one was looking. But despite the fact he was usually a shockingly bad striker, Whitehurst became a Hull City cult hero, often named 'God' or 'Big Billy' by fans of the time due to his strength and his quite frankly insane work rate. Whitehurst apparently beat up Vinnie Jones at Sheffield United, but the scariest thing? During his time at Oxford, he wasn't making the money, so he fought and beat up the local gypsies for money... jeez..... I picked the one season where Billy delivered, particularly on the assists front for some bizarre reason. But also when the carnage was at it's peak....
