And just like Giggs, Billy was famous for his burst of pace, mazey dribbling runs and deadly crosses. Meredith was football's first big superstar. Wherever he played, he would attract massive crowds who would flock to watch him play. He played with a swagger and confidence, as well as playing while chewing a toothpick for concentration. He was said to have the attitude of Cantona combined with the playing style reminiscent of a George Best or Giggs. When he first started playing, his first clubs were Chrik's local club and Northwich Victoria, until he joined Manchester City in 1894 when he was 20. His debut was against Newcastle where City lost 5-4. The following game was a different story as he scored twice against Newton Heath (Manchester United) in the first ever Manchester derby. He soon became a favourite amongst the City fans, as he helped City win the Second Division in 1899 and 1903 plus the FA Cup in 1904. But he also had some controversy with him. In 1904, the whole of the City team received an 18 month ban after Meredith was accused of bribing Aston Villa's Alec Leake £10 to lose a game. in May 1906, he shocked the City fans when he signed for arch rivals Manchester United. His debut was on January 1st 1907 against Aston Villa in a 1-0 win. During this time United were under the great Ernest Mangall, and under him, Meredith was a major part in United's success as they won the League title in 1908 and 1911, as well as the FA Cup in 1909. In 1907, English footballers formed a Union, that would stand together at some of the FA's ruling. Most players were forced to leave it, but Meredith stuck to his guns and stayed to try and kept the Union going. Billy and teammate Charlie Roberts worked together and were central figures in 'Outcasts FC'. In 1910 they eventually won the FA over as they allowed the Union to exist. During all this Meredith was in fantastic form for United. Unfortunately, WW1 broke out, and he was never his old self after the war. Meredith then moved back to City in 1921, where he finished his career. He also had 48 caps for Wales, and retiring from internationally football at the extraordinary age of 48. Later on he played his last game for City against Newcastle at the age of 49, and retired straight after the game. He dided in 1958 at the age of 83. There was Pele, Maradonna and Best, but the first of them all was Billy Meredith. _________________ Alan Hansen wrote: How come Liverpool games are on last at the moment?
