One of South Africa’s greatest all round sportsman. Partook in rugby , tennis and professional golf but it was with football where he would make his name. What if someone told you that a South African once captained one of the biggest clubs in the world , you would probably think it were a lie , but believe it or not Nivvy did and that club was Liverpool. Whilst playing in South Africa , Nivvy and fellow team mate Lance Carr were spotted by former Liverpool goalkeeper (also South African) Arthur Riley , who arranged that they play for Liverpool. Nieuwenhuys managed to play 260 games for the Reds , scoring 79 goals , a good tally for any winger. The English football writers said that Nivvy was the best winger in England at the time. Nivvy had it all , incredible pace , quick feet , a venomous shot and a heart of gold. He played in every position except as left winger and goalkeeper , no wonder he captained Liverpool. During the Second World War Nivvy was a PT trainer for the Royal Air Force and guested for teams like Arsenal , West Ham United and Aston Villa. Nivvy’s days at Liverpool saw him play with some of the most talented footballers to ever play for the club , like South African born Gordon Hodgson as well as other Liverpool legends like Billy Liddell , Bob Paisley , Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins just to name a few. Berry Nieuwenhuys will be forever a Liverpool legend , its just sad to know that in his homeland South Africa , most have never even heard of him. _________________ forever and always - football Berry NIEUWENHUYS | 1933-1940 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
