He was regarded as a star player as big as Pelé was. Coutinho was considered to be the main partner of ''The King'' and he produced very skillful moves with great Pelé (the famous ''tabelinhas'', one-two plays; sometimes using only his head, which usually ended with one of the players scoring a goal). Coutinho had his debut at the age of 15, playing side by side with Pelé, with whom he coincided and formed an effective attacking duo. Coutinho wore Santos’ jersey from 1958-1968 and in 1970, winning 22 titles and being the number three all-time top-scorer in Santos' history (370 goals in 457 games). Coutinho was supposed to be the main striker of the Brazilian team in 1962 World Cup but he was injured on the eve of the competition and lost his place to experienced Vava, World Cup champion from 1958. Coutinho's main virtues were the coolness and tranquility during goalscoring opportunities. Besides that, he had two more major characteristics. One was ability to dribble past opponents in a few meters area and finalization skill with a rarely seen perfection. Thus, he was given the nickname ''Genius of the small area''. He surpassed other centre-forwards which were also at the club, as Toninho Guerreiro and Sorcery.
