However despite looking the ideal partner for Joe Jordan and scoring 13 goals in 26 league starts he was sold to Brighton in 1980 for £500,000. This was possibly the worst thing Manager Dave Sexton could do as United struggled to win the title for many years to come and Ritchie went onto a fine league career though didn't peak until late in his career with Oldham when he guided them to the league Cup final and FA Cup semi final in the 1989/1990 season. Ritchie was greedy for goals, strong possesed fine control, could strike a ball cleanly with both feet but only truly lacked pace. At United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leeds United, Oldham Athletic and Scarborough, he enjoyed a fine career making 661 appearances (88 as substitute) and scoring 210 goals. Ritchie is regarded as one of Oldham's finest ever footballers, and is also an ex-manager of the club. During the 89/90 ''pinch me season'' when The Latics got to the final of the League Cup and the semi-final of the FA Cup he was the clubs top scorer with 28 goals.
