However despite looking the ideal partner for Joe Jordan and scoring 13 goals in 26 league starts he was sold to Brighton in 1980 for £500,000. This was possibly the worst thing Manager Dave Sexton could do as United struggled to win the title for many years to come and Ritchie went onto a fine league career though didn't peak until late in his career with Oldham when he guided them to the league Cup final and FA Cup semi final in the 1989/1990 season. Ritchie was greedy for goals, strong possesed fine control, could strike a ball cleanly with both feet but only truly lacked pace. At United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leeds United, Oldham Athletic and Scarborough, he enjoyed a fine career making 661 appearances (88 as substitute) and scoring 210 goals. Ritchie is regarded as one of Oldham's finest ever footballers, and is also an ex-manager of the club. During the 89/90 ''pinch me season'' when The Latics got to the final of the League Cup and the semi-final of the FA Cup he was the clubs top scorer with 28 goals. He is still very highly regarded by United fans who wondered what if? and Oldham fans who still chant his name with the song ''Andy Ritchie's Magic'' Andy RITCHIE | 1977-1980 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
