He did all his training in Rio Ave and already with 17 years old he entered the Varzim and debuted as a senior team in the season of 1979/80. While serving Varzim, he began to attract the interest of bigger clubs, and in 1984-85 was hired by FC Porto. Right in the first season with the Dragons shirt, André became National Champion, a title that would repeat the following season, adding the victory on the Portuguese Super Cup. In 1986/87 was his first major victory of his career wining the European Champions Cup after beating Bayern Munich in the final. In the following season he continued on the path of victories to win the title of national champion, the Cup of Portugal, and more importantly, the Intercontinental Cup in Japan’s city of Tokyo against Peñarol from Uruguay, to wich he added the European Supper Cup. In 1988/89 he didn’t win any title, but he is again sacred Portuguese champion in the following season and win the Super Cup. In the 1990/91 season he won another Cup in Portugal, and also won one more Super Cup. In the following season was once again National Champion, title which he repeated in the season that followed where he repeated the victory in one more Super Cup. In the following seasons he added a few more titles to his curriculum. Ending his careed on the season 1994/95, as National Champion, putting an end to his brilliant career as a footballer.
