He was captain of the team that gathered the 5 Violins and was adressed by everyone as Senhor Cardoso'''' (Mr. Cardozo - the same'' logic as Eusebio to Captain Coluna: a sign of respect and education). Good perception of the flow of the game, excelent positioning, he was a defender that mainly evidenced himself by his sportmanship and character. Being a strong willed player, he was a natural born leader in a team full of stars. He joined SCP from Vitória de Setúbal at 1938/1939 finishing his career in the 1947/1948 season in the Portuguese Cup Final trowing his boot to the audience, playing 252 matches by SCP scoring 3 goals. He won the National Championships of 40/41, 43/44, 46/47, and 47/48 as well as the Portuguese Cups of 40/41, 44/45, 45/46 and 47/48. He represented the National Team 13 times being captain 11 times out of this 13. Curisioties: His strong charisma granted him, almost at 1st glance, the rank of captain which, at the time, was a more solid and important role that it is today. That position allowed him, if necessary, to slap his teammates who were performing poorly or lacking motivation and determination. And he did it sometimes. In January 1947, Portugal beat, for the 1st time (officialy speaking), Spain NT for 4-1 at the National Stadium. This epic victory was carved by a curious episode: the night before the game, Álvaro Cardoso (the captain of the Portuguese NT) received an anonimous phonecall telling him that he was soon to receive lucky talismann which he would have to bury behind one of the nets. Shortly after, he received a goat horn wrapped on a silk tissue. He then ordered his fellow NT teammate Serafim das Neves to bury the goat at night so anyone would notice it. He did it. And Portugal won... This legendary player was probably the best ever captain of SCP, always respected by his companions and assumed the role (as portrayed by the chronicles) as a mixture of wizard and general.
