He was a gentleman inside and outside the field as well as a all around sportsman, as he played also tennis, basket and table tennis, getting some titles on these sports. He also finished his degree on Economics whily playing, probably contributting to his futebolistic numbers don't stand with his potential. Coming from Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP) youth system, he made his debut on the senior squad on the 26th April 1961, few days after his 20 years birthday, in a game of the Portuguese Cup, where SCP defeated Atlético by 2-0. Only from 1963/64 he got to be a permanent choice in the starting eleven, assuming the command of the defence in a team that won the Cups Winners Cup, in a brilliant campaign where he played 8 games. He reached the National Squad making his first game on the 4th June 1964, in a game from Nations Cup at Brasil, in a 1-1 draw against England. He reached his peek at 1965/66, where he was the leader of the amazing defence SCP hat at the time, alongside Morais, José Carlos and Hilário. He was also a proeminent cornerstone of the National Squad and, at that year, he played 5 of the 6 games Portugal played in World Cup 1966 getting the 3rd place. He retired at the age of 30, giving the feeling that he could do more, but he had his own ideas of his living and football was not top prioritie, despite reaching a notable status as a football player. He played 153 games for SCP, scoring 3 times and winning 2 National Championships and one Portugal Cup.
