Not if Herbet Chapman was to have his way! Herbie moved him deep into a central midfield position, and it proved to be a revelation. Alex James was the original Fabregas for Arsenal! He had a superb range of passes with immense accuracy, he would link play from the defence to the attack in superb playmaker style and had a phenomenal first touch! And because of these fantastic qualities, the manager allowed James certain privileges. For example, he was allowed to stay in bed longer than the other players on match days, but it did not affect his performances. He then retired in 1937 after playing 231 games for Arsenal and with a plethora of trophies and medals. During World War Two, James served in the Royal Artillery and when he returned, he ran a football pools competition. In 1949 he coached the youth sides at Arsenal, but tragically died in 1953 from cancer at the age of 51.
