Scanlon came through the Manchester United youth system, making his debut for the club in 1954. Scanlon would help the club to two league titles (1956 and 1957). He would score 35 goals in his career, including 16 in 1959. Scanlon was an enigma. A dashing wingman with high velocity dribbling skills and verve who could wreak havoc with both feet. After a bright start to his United career he battled the more skilled David Pegg for the left wing position. Though Pegg had more skills, Scanlon was quicker and perhaps more exciting with an unpredicatable streak. He had just won his place back at the time of the Munich crash. At the age of 22, he suffered a fractured skull, a broken leg and kidney problems in the Munich air disaster, but made a full recovery and was back in action at the start of the 1958-59 season. He was about to sign for Arsenal just before the air crash, but the projected transfer was then cancelled. Albert left United for Newcastle United in 1960, but his time on Tyneside was not a success and he then dropped down to a lower level to play for Lincoln City, Mansfield Town and finally Newport County, before retiring as a player in 1966. On 13 May 2007, Albert Scanlon presented the Premiership trophy to Manchester United along with former colleague Bill Foulkes. Albert SCANLON | 1957-1958 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
